Please join us for an upcoming training on Survivors First Act vacatur petitions, to be held on March 10, 2025 from 9-11am via Zoom.
This training is an exciting opportunity for attorneys to learn the knowledge and skills needed to represent victims and survivors of human trafficking who were convicted of criminal offenses as a result of their trafficking victimization.
The Survivors First Act allows for convictions and sentences to be vacated if the offense occurred as the direct result of trafficking victimization. CEASE is working with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council of Georgia (CJCC) to identify trafficking survivors who are currently incarcerated in Georgia Department of Corrections Facilities to determine whether they may be eligible for relief under this Act.
Featuring Amy Hutsell, Program Director of CJCC’s Sexual Assault, Child Abuse and Human Trafficking Unit, this training will explore the history, purpose, and importance of the Survivors First Act. In addition, CEASE Clinic Director Emma Hetherington and CEASE Staff Attorney Brian Atkinson will provide training on trauma-informed representation and writing vacatur petitions.
CEASE is working to develop a network of attorneys who would be interested in providing pro bono representation to survivors seeking relief under the Survivors First Act. Upon completion of the training, attorneys can be a referral source for survivors who are identified as potentially eligible for that relief.
