Publication: CEASE is hiring a Post-Graduate Legal Fellow

The Wilbanks Child Endangerment and Sexual Exploitation (CEASE) Clinic is hiring a Post-Graduate Legal Fellow to start as soon as possible, and no later than October 1, 2024. This is a one-year fellowship appointment.

The Fellow position is a one-year appointment and the Fellow will be located primarily in Athens, Georgia. Some travel to Savannah, GA and other areas across Georgia will be required as requested by the Director and Staff Attorney.

Job Description

  • Legal Services: The Fellow will represent survivors of child sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking across the sexual abuse-to-prison pipeline in a variety of civil, juvenile dependency, and post-conviction matters. As part of the University of Georgia’s mission to prepare law students for practice, the Fellow will supervise law students in providing legal services. The Fellow will work under the supervision of the Director and Staff Attorney. The Fellow is responsible for working together with the Staff Attorney and Director to ensure the effective management of CEASE legal matters. The Fellow will also work closely with the Social Work Advocate to ensure intensive case management services for clients.
  • Community Outreach & Education: The Fellow will be assist with building community relationships and networks in Athens, Savannah, and other communities across Georgia through outreach, education, and other initiatives. Community outreach and education includes, but is not limited to, representing CEASE on task forces and multidisciplinary teams; referring survivors to community-based services; collaborating with victim-services providers, placements, and other community members and organizations working with survivors; building a pro bono network to increase post-conviction relief legal services for survivors; and developing and conducting trainings for attorneys and other advocates working with survivors.
  • Curriculum and Policy Development: The Fellow will assist the Director in policy and curriculum development, including development of courses related to the clinic’s work, policy and legislative advocacy, and other clinic-related curriculum and policy development needs.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Competencies

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and seek guidance when appropriate.
  • Advocacy skills, excellent writing skills, and experience working with varying and vulnerable clients.
  • Georgia Bar admission is required upon the date of hire, or applicant must have sat for the July 2024 Georgia Bar Exam. Continuation of employment dependent on bar passage.
